In October 2010, Open Studio will present Printopolis, a four-day symposium with an international focus featuring panel discussions, printmaking demonstrations, artist talks and related programming at visual art venues across the City of Toronto. Printopolis is a unique offering in Canada: although those with an interest in print media come together annually at the SGC International Conference held at various locations around the US, and biennially at the Impact Conference held at various locations around the world, this is the first time that a conference of this scale devoted to print media has ever been held in Canada. Celebrating forty years of operations, and as one of the leading printmaking centres in Canada, Open Studio is uniquely poised to undertake this exceptional endeavour.
A highlight of the symposium weekend will be concurrent exhibitions focusing on contemporary print media by local, national and international artists at venues throughout the city. In addition to exhibitions at Open Studio, a number of visual arts venues—including commercial, public and educational galleries—across the GTA have been engaged to participate in Printopolis. Over 35 Printopolis affiliated exhibitions have been scheduled.
In conjunction with Printopolis, OCAD U’s printmaking department is hosting There will be Printing in the Streets: a steam roller printmaking festival featuring fine art printed by steamroller, demonstrations by special guest artists from Drive By Press and an opportunity for the public to make their own prints under the supervision of OCAD U printmaking students.
